Conservation Heating System Designed for Sir John Soane’s Museum

Sir John Soane, the architect of the Bank of England, negotiated an Act of Parliament in 1833 to preserve his house and private collection in Lincoln’s Inn Fields.

Working with Julian Harrap Architects, Green Building Design Consultants have designed a conservation heating system to limit humidity and conserve the building’s fabric and decoration. Funded by the Hertitage Lottery Fund, the adaptations to the existing heating system are part of a £7m refurbishment project to create a new shop, gallery and event space.

Careful surveys were undertaken to track pipework routes and assess the condition of the existing equipment. Pipework was modified for low pressure hot water central heating, with new controls activated by humidity sensors.
